Qatar makes cement quality test mandatory
Qatar has made it mandatory for imported cement to pass a quality test to qualify for use, a senior official said yesterday.
Dr Mohamed Saif Al Kuwari, director general of Qatar General Authority for Standards and Measurements, told The Peninsula yesterday that the step was being taken in view of large-scale import of cement to meet rising demand fuelled by the construction boom.
It has also been made compulsory for cement importers to get a certification of standards for a consignment issued in the country of export, said Mohamed Saif.
“To be acceptable to us, the certification should be of global standard,” he pointed out. “If an importer has this certification in respect of a consignment, we will take samples and allow the stocks to be released immediately,” he added.
The sample will be sent for a detailed analysis at the central laboratory in Abu Hamour and its results will be known only after 28 days.
If it is found that the cement does not comply with global standards, the importer will be immediately informed and asked to retrieve stocks from the market and either return them to the supplier or destroy them.
He said that Qatar had no standards and specifications of its own for cement. “We will, therefore, rely on the UK and US standards until the time we have our own rules in place,” he said.
