ROMANIA: Antitrust Body Fines Cement Producers
Romania's antitrust body fined the country's main cement producers euro28.5 million (US$35.9 million) on Thursday for allegedly fixing prices on the local market.
The Romanian unit of France's Lafarge SA, Lafarge Romcim, was fined euro10.4 million (US$13.1 million), Switzerland's Holcim Ltd. unit, Holcim Romania, euro8 million (US$10.1 million); and Germany's Heidelbergcement AG unit, Carpatcement, euro8.6 million (US$10.86 million).
The Competition Council, which regulates Romania's markets, said the three formed a cartel with the aim of imposing price levels on the local market between 2000 and 2004.
Holcim Romania was fined an additional euro1.4 million (US$1.76 million) for allegedly breaking competition rules after it bought a new cement plant.
Lafarge Romcim was also accused of exporting cement at prices that were lower than the production costs and raising prices on the Romanian market, state news agency Rompres reported.
Lafarge Romcim rejected the charges and vowed to appeal the ruling in court. The company said in a statement that the sanctions were based on unfounded accusations and that investigators didn't take into account data provided by Lafarge.
